Abstract

Africa has built its knowledge economy since the rise of its ancient civilizations. The turn of the new millennium marked the rise of Africa’s digital knowledge economy, as it did for the rest of the world. This article analyses Africa’s knowledge systems, linking the foundational sources of original research to ancient knowledge systems and tracing these systems into the current digital era within which the article locates Africa’s knowledge economy. What are the epistemological and ontological bases of African knowledge systems, and how do they relate to Africa’s modern digital knowledge economy? This study has two parts: The first traces the epistemological and ontological foundations of knowledge systems originating from Africa, and the second links these knowledge systems together to uncover Africa’s current digital knowledge economy. The author then discusses options for building and boosting access to quality research from Africa within the global digital knowledge space. The article ends with a brief discussion of the implications of those options for modern Africa and the world.
