All materials published in the journal are duly copyrighted by the University. Submission Guidelines

HUJAS is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, online journal dedicated to publishing the highest-quality research and scholarship centered primarily on Africa and including the Global African Diaspora (GAD). The journal invites original works pertinent to the discovery and production of research-generated knowledge on Africa and GAD in all relevant disciplines. Submissions and publications are free of charge. Submitted manuscripts will be considered based on their adherence to the scholarship standards in the corresponding disciplines. Authors are also required to adhere to the HUJAS formatting and referencing styles as indicated below. The contents of all submitted manuscripts are expected to be original. Authors are required to include a statement declaring that the manuscripts have not been published and are not under consideration for publication by other journals. HUJAS uses plagiarism detection software, and in submitting their manuscripts authors consent to having those manuscripts screened against previously published literature.

Articles should be 6,000 to 8,000 words in length, inclusive of endnotes and works cited. They must also include:

  • An abstract of 300 words or less
  • A short biography of 50 words or less, with the author's full name, title, institutional affiliation, and a brief description of his or her recent work.

Manuscripts should be in Microsoft Word, typed in Times New Roman 12-point font, and double spaced.

To ensure fair and objective double-blind peer reviewing, authors are required to only identify themselves in the short biography that will appear on the front page of the manuscript, which will not be made available to peer reviewers. Any direct or indirect referencing that could identify the author is to be avoided throughout the manuscript.

Formatting

Authors are asked to minimize the use of underlining, bolding, and italics (apart from book titles, journal names, and non-English words).

Authors are also asked to minimize the use of tables, graphics, maps, and images. When such items are essential, they must be submitted as separate files in .jpg or .gif format. Their proper place is to be indicated in the text with the notation [Insert Table 1, or Graphic 3, or Map 1, or Image 2 here]. The numbering of the items in the separate files must correspond to the in-text notation.

Articles should have accurate page numbering.

Citation Style

HUJAS uses the American Psychological Association (APA) Style which can be accessed here: APA Citation Guide. Manuscripts that do not adhere to these guidelines will be returned for revision before any review is conducted.
