Abstract:
Youth exiting out of foster care can often feel unprepared to transition into adulthood due to poor relational skills, self-regulation skills and independent living skills (Paul Ward, 2009). As of September 2021, there were 391,098 youth in the foster care system throughout the United States (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). In Washington, DC currently, there are 542 children and youth under Child and Family Services care (Child and Family Services, 2023). Though this number has decreased slightly since last year, the needs of these youth still stay the same. An educational module for foster, kinship, and adoptive parents, also known as resource parents, was developed and implemented in aim to increase successful adulthood outcomes for transition age youth exiting the foster care system. Pre and post data was collected in order to gauge the level of learning that occurred amongst the resource parents. Results indicated that following implementation of the Transitions: Life Skills for Adulthood program, the resource parents in attendance had an 50% increased level of understanding on how to support transition age youth and a 63% increase in confidence of ability to support youth transitioning into adulthood.
