Capstone Project Title: Development of a Sensory-Friendly Environment: A Room for Children Diagnosed with Autism
Capstone Faculty Advisor: Dr. Phyllis Ross, OTD, OTR/L, CHT, CLT
Abstract:
This capstone project explores how sensory rooms help alleviate the difficulties in learning and well-being brought on by children diagnosed with autism. To improve student focus, selfregulation, and, eventually, academic success, the project uses affordable materials to create stimulating and calming environments (Darling-Hammond & Cook-Harvey, 2024). The study has been completed at Kidspeak Speech & Language Services in Charlotte, North Carolina. This project aims to reinforce the demands and advantages of a sensory room as seen by therapists, educators, and volunteers. Additionally, this project aims to enable students who struggle with sensory processing to flourish in inclusive learning environments by creating and implementing specially planned activities guided by sensory integration principles.
