Description

Mrs. Julia West Hamilton was an African American women’s leader in Washington, DC, serving as the first president of the Washington and Vicinity Federation of Women’s Clubs from 1924 through 1945, founding member of the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA and its president for 28 years, first female chairman of a membership drive for the Washington chapter of the NAACP, and as an officer in the National Association of Colored Women during a long career of activism. She was a member of Washington's Metropolitan AME Church for 70 years and the first female chairman of its trustee board.
