Founded as the Normal School for Colored Girls in 1851 by Myrtilla Miner, a White abolitionist and philanthropist. Harriet Beecher Stowe, another White abolitionist, and author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," contributed $1,000 of her book royalties to the opening of the school.
