The Genius of Universal Emancipation was an anti-slavery periodical. It was edited and published by Benjamin Lundy. He was an abolitionist and traveled across the world advocating for the end of slavery. The Genius of Universal Emancipation began publication in 1821. Soon after, William Lloyd Garrison, a journalist and abolitionist, came to work with Lundy on the paper. From 1836 to 1838, Lundy worked with U.S. Representative John Quincy Adams against the annexation of Texas, which would expand slavery. He advocated for freed-slave colonies in Mexico and spent time traveling in search of suitable places such as Canada and Haiti, where freed slaves could live.
