The Illinois Record was an early African American newspaper published in Springfield at the close of the 19th century. Founded in 1897 by A.V. Broady, the weekly paper served the city’s Black community, offering local news, church updates, and social notes that documented everyday life and community concerns. Running into the early 1900s, the Illinois Record was part of a broader tradition of Black press outlets in Illinois that provided vital platforms for African American voices, advocacy, and community connection during an era of segregation and limited representation in mainstream media.
