Human Rights: 1835-1838

Human Rights was an abolitionist newspaper first published in July 1835 in New York City by R. G. Williams for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Created during a period of intense national debate over slavery, the paper aimed to clearly and honestly present the beliefs and goals of “Immediate Abolitionists” to the American public. Its early issues strongly condemned slavery, promoted equal rights, and advocated for the immediate emancipation of enslaved people. Through essays, commentary, and reports, Human Rights contributed to the growing antislavery movement in the years leading up to the Civil War.
