Abstract
Investigations of referred pain and its neural and anatomical basis are reviewed to provide an explanation for the effects of cutaneous stimulation on the visceral organs. A comparison between the distribution of dermatomes and the meridians with important acupuncture points indicates that the meridians also follow the serial distribution of dermatomes and may represent the overlapping area with abundant nerve supplies. Electrophysiologic and neuroanatomical studies of many scientists suggest that the material basis of acupuncture therapeutics is primarily the nervous system.
