Fraternal publications preserved the everyday history of African American communities that larger newspapers often overlooked. They documented leadership within organizations such as the Prince Hall Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Elks, and numerous church-affiliated benevolent societies. The Fraternal Herald documented the work of Black fraternal organizations that helped sustain African American communities through mutual aid, leadership, education, and civic engagement.
