Dr. Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950), a renowned surgeon, author, Spingarn medalist, and pioneer in the field of human blood storage, is widely recognized as the "Father of the Blood Bank." Tragically, his distinguished medical career was cut short in 1950 due to a fatal car accident.
The Charles R. Drew Papers are a collection of materials generously donated by various contributors. Comprising three distinct groups (collections 134, 135, and 136), each representing a different donor, the collection maintains its original sectional arrangement to ensure provenance.
These photographs encompass the entirety of Dr. Drew's life, including personal family photographs featuring Mrs. Drew and their children, glimpses into his childhood and early adulthood, documentation of his remarkable achievements in medicine, and images of the Red Cross staff and the pioneering Blood Bank Mobile.
