The Church Advocate was a monthly newspaper edited by George F. Bragg, a prominent African American Episcopal priest, civil rights advocate, and historian. Born in 1863, Bragg became one of the most influential Black leaders in the Episcopal Church during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through The Church Advocate, he promoted racial uplift, religious education, and social justice within both the church and the broader African American community. According to The New York Public Library, Bragg believed the Episcopal Church offered a vital forum where educated individuals could communicate across racial divisions. In addition to his journalism and activism, he founded St. James’ First African American Episcopal Church in Baltimore and worked to document Black Episcopalian history, leaving a lasting legacy in both religious and civil rights history.
