The Leavenworth Advocate was a weekly African American newspaper published in Leavenworth, Kansas, from 1889 to 1891. It succeeded The Advocate, which began in 1888, and was edited and published by W.B. Townsend. The paper served as a vital platform for the African American community in Kansas, addressing issues pertinent to their social and political lives during the post-Reconstruction era.
In 1891, the Leavenworth Advocate merged with the Historic Times of Lawrence, Kansas, to form the Times-Observer based in Topeka. This merger reflected a broader trend of consolidation among African American newspapers seeking to amplify their reach and influence.
