Abstract

The Carl R. Gross Collection consists primarily of biographical materials and memorabilia of some outstanding Blacks who resided in Providence, Rhode Island during the turn of the 20th Century. It was assembled by Dr. Gross, a native of Providence, whose interest in the Black history of Rhode Island was stimulated by his appointment to the Governor's Tercentenary Committee in 1935. The collection, totaling 52 items and spanning the period 1856-1966, was donated to Howard University by Dr. Gross January 23, 1967.
