The Hilltop is the student newspaper of Howard University. Founded in 1924 by famed author Zora Neale Hurston, the paper has documented the voice of the student population on campus. Issues covered in the newspaper range campus concerns to national and international issues. Such events include the activities of the development of the modern civil rights movement, student activism surrounding major events such as the struggle for civil rights, Vietnam War, independence across the African continent, the fight to free Nelson Mandela and the student response to events like the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001. Over its 94 years of history the paper has documented almost every major event of the 20th century.
