Description

First official Photos of Negro Marines The ranks of America's oldest fighting force, the U.S. Marines Corps, have been opened to the nation's Negroes, which are being trained to carry on the Marine traditions of 167 years. One unit has already been assigned to overseas duty. Others are completing their training in artillery, anti-aircraft, communications, and the varied duties which these sea-going Negro soldiers will soon be called upon to perform. Their basic training includes the same programs practiced by all Marines. Zoot suites are the vogue among these Negroes who mark a precedent in the traditions of the 167-year old Marine Corps who recently opened their ranks to all Negroes who can meet the high standards of the leathernecks. These newly arrived recruits await the last of their instructions before donning the marine work clothes which they'll wear throughout their long weeks of "boot" training.
